View Full Version : How well does your field enforce rate of fire limits? (rec-ball)

Just wondering. I'm glad many fields are replacing their old rental stock with newer sear trippers and the like. Closing the firepower gap between the first time rental player and the veteran player is good for the growth of the sport. As far as I know though, the refs at most fields dont really have any way of enforcing ROF limits (if there even is one) and they tend to be under-paid young adults with little leverage/authority over some of the more menacing players that sandbag their way into beginner walk-on/ intermediate walk-on. The only consolation is the ones who try to really overkill their rate of fire usually end up cleaning their marker for the majority of the day :D

I guess its a very hard thing for fields to deal with. I would rather they set a firm bps limit than limit firing modes, but thats mainly because I have an injury to my right index finger and just cant pull fast (i can just barely make the 5 pulls per sec to activate ramping on the etek3). They would need to provide those shot counters for their refs. A hefty investment.

Anywho I was wondering how your local field deals with the issue.

Xtreme Paintball Park near STL has a limit of 10 BPS. The fortunate thing is that with the crowd that plays there, the cap is self inforced. Most people play within the 10 BPS limit and people recognize when someone is overdoing it and we(the players) let them know. Refs will remind players at the beginning of the day at times too. Since Total Greif is essentially the staff manning the fields and working there, they have a strong interest in the smooth operation of the field.

Unfortunately, not all fields are like Xtreme. I can't imagine what kind of issues fields like Badlandz back in Chicago would have with a ROF cap like that considering the type of crowd it draws.

Really, there isn't any way to enforce it unless you do have shot counters. From what I understand, some of the D1 and Pro players will use cheater boards in the NCPA tourneys, and since most of the regional tournaments don't have a way to enforce the 12.5 BPS cap they get away with it.

Let me put a picture in your head. Ref says tourney rules, which means don't take off your barrel sock until the ten second count. That (to the tourney players) meant ramping too, and with no ROF cap at our field there was plenty of paint being sprayed. I'm glad I didn't play pump that day because I can snap through inconsistent semi lanes but not uncapped ramping. It was pretty ridiculous but that was only one weekend.

I play a LOT of fields and I can tell you that for the most part (in houston anyway), if the field isn't Semi only...its a self enforced thing. Most of the time when some jacka$$ starts shooting 15 or 17 BPS the other players will run them off the field, unless its the "main rec" group. A lot of times I see ppl simply not come back out because of them.
